Project Structure
The Supporting LIFE project comprised of four core work packages, WP2 to WP5.
- In WP2 an assessment of the technical feasibility of the e-IMCI was undertaken and the electronic version of IMCI was built and optimal fit for purpose of vital signs devices was identified.
- WP3 focused on the clinical feasibility of IMCI/e-IMCI.
- WP4 generated key Supporting LIFE evidence for the HSA adherence to IMIC/e-IMCI and its effect on other process measures and patient outcomes as well as an implementation strategy was developed.
- The final core work package (WP5) developed design guidelines for how the e-IMCI solution can become part of a national disease surveillance and management policy.
The above-mentioned activities were supported by a set of base functions: WP1 tackled Methodology, Infrastructure and Evaluation, WP 6 ensured the horizontal dissemination
and WP 7 managed the Supporting LIFE project.
Impact
- Supporting LIFE developed a eCCM App that both frontline health workers in Malawi and caregivers considered to increase quality of healthcare for under-5 children.
- The clinical trial of the SL App on the ground in Malawi was the first trial to assess the effectiveness of a CCM smartphone application in Malawi and thus made a significant contribution to data-driven decision-making in Malawi and other low and middle income countries.
- Supporting LIFE also developed design guidelines for a Malawian disease surveillance information system which may have an impact on the future of disease surveillance in Malawi.
- Relationships to stakeholders in Malawi were developed that can lead to successful collaborations in the future to implement eCCM in Malawi and increase the health system in Malawi and other low and middle income countries.
